Why ask me to design your website?
Because of my background, experience and approach. I could help make the process of putting together an easy-to-use elegant website much easier and more cost-effective than you'd think.

"Brilliant work, I'm very grateful to you and I'm happy to recommend you to future clients."
Management and training consultant
"The website was a real bonus. It took most of the requests we would have had through the post so it saved us an awful lot of work. I believe it has increased the interest as we have had nearly 4700 requests as to the 2700 last year!"

My background
I have a strong foundation in the principles of information design, graphic design and information structure.
I have a grounding in the art of typography and information design, rather than computer usage! I studied graphic design at a time when computers were only just being used to publish. I learnt my craft with metal and wooden type and paper.
I studied information science, writing my main diploma peice about the impact the Web may have on traditional sources and ways of delivering information.
I then worked in the frontline of delivering customer-focused content whilst an information professional.

My experience
I have a proven track record in making successful, usable, easy-to-update websites. Over the last 11 years I have designed, produced and project-managed 129 information-led websites. See the design pages for examples of my recent web projects.
My clients have included:
- small to medium-sized organisations
- charities and foundations
- non-governmental organisations (NGOs)
- National Probation Service areas
- national broadcasters
- individuals including writers, artists, craftpeople, mangement consultants, trainers and public figures
Since 2001 I have been teaching people from a wide range of organisations how to structure and write copy for the web. See the training page for details of courses I run.

My approach
A personal service
You will get a personal service from me. You will always speak directly to me throughout the project, rather than an intermediary. I will involve you in the process of putting together your website. I will set out the stages, and the deliverables you can expect at each stage.
I do not use templates. The design will be led by your brand identity, the information you need to communicate, and the needs of your audience. Every site I design comes out of close collaboration and discussion with each client. I will apply 'user-centric' design principles to deliver a website that takes into consideration the information needs of your target audience.
Specialists
I work with other appropriate tried-and-trusted professionals to fullfil a brief. These have included editors, proofreaders, technical specialists, photographers, strategists and web video producers. I am experienced in liasing with and commissioning other specialists in order to specify the work required and to monitor their progress - so you don't have to. I do not 'mark-up' for their services.
Support
I can advise you on writing for the web by supplying you with written advice and a list of recommended books. I will also give you feedback when you are editing the text. I will help you write navigational text so that people can find the content easily.
I will support you after your website is live. I can provide maintenance training so that you can update your site yourselves. Or I can update your website.
I am willing to commit to a long-term relationship with you to enable your site content to grow over time. I have built up successful relationships with The Esmee Fairbairn Foundation (over 6 years), local probation sites (6 years) and Channel 4 Television (7 years).
Value for money
I recognise that budgets for small organisations and charities are tight. The service I provide will make the best use of your resources. Having worked on over 100 websites means that I can design and produce websites quicker with better solutions. I automatically explore your future content and technical needs. This may mean cost savings in the long-term as the structure, design and technology will be scalable. I'm self-employed. I have few overheads and no staff to pay salaries to.
